|
|
Hi all. I'm new to the group but I've got a twist on the "how do I get it in" question. I've spotted a 2005 Niva originally imported into France but now in England with 14K miles for about $5K US. I know I can't register anything newer than 1987. So...
First question: If I ship this to Port Newark NJ can I immediately flatbed it home without any major problems?
Second Question: If I find any Lada title for something 1987 or older from Canada is anybody going to check any further?
Lastly, if a Russian contact comes up with a Russian title for a 1987 Niva, which would probably be suspect since it would at best be coming out of the back door of their DMV and at worst come off of somebody's printer, is anyone at my local DMV going to be able to verify or cast doubt on it?
I've owned a Yugo, an Isuzu, and currently own a 92 Capri (Australian-built) and a 58 Rolls so I'm pretty used to chasing down obscure car parts so that part doesn't scare me.
Thanks all. _________________ Life's too short to drive a Honda |

| The issue is that you can't even SHIP a car newer than 25 years to the US. Without proper paperwork it will have to be shipped back or destroyed. |

Even if I claim I'm not going to put it on public roads? I see little non-street legal Dihatsu pickup trucks around here on college campuses and plant grounds. _________________ Life's too short to drive a Honda |

I remember an American stealing... uh, I mean, importing a Canadian 4-door sedan into the U.S. that was not old enough by stating it would not be used on roads.
In fact, he used it for the Lemons 24-hour race.

A bad day working on the Lada is better than a good day at work. |

| That approach is a little more touchy, I recommend "making" sure it is old enough before you cross. |

| My suggestion is don't even attempt even though I do know for a fact that Victor in Portland Oregon has imported about 30 Ladas from Canada almost All of them newer than 25 years old, and I'm Assuming he's used the.....it's going to be used for parts....line for getting all of these cars in to the US, and maybe he just knows someone at customs, hard to say, but the fact that All of his cars are sitting in Portland Oregon and Not sitting in Canada, means he's getting them in somehow!!! |

Well, he must have a trick of sorts because I've been doing some research and it looks pretty difficult if not almost impossible to get your hands on it after it arrives at port. The title business is the easier part once its firmly in the US. Maybe Victor just has Canadians drive his into the US. _________________ Life's too short to drive a Honda |

I guess you are right rrshadow2. If you import a Lada motor separately from its body, you are getting spare parts not a car.
This trick is also used in my country in order to avoid customs restrictions. |

|

Hi all -- after checking every scheme I could think of to just get the blue 2005 Niva into the USA and out of port I've pretty much given up.
If you're more resourceful than me, it's still on UK ebay for under $4K US (just go to EbayUK and search Niva and you'll see it) and, to me, anyway, it looked pretty good. It's been listed and relisted for over a month so the price may be negotiable. I regret missing the Niva listed in Montreal --I've got to come to this forum more often. _________________ Life's too short to drive a Honda |

Interesting... as I was told that, using that sytem of towing, the car you are pulling needs to be insured as some of the car's wheels are still touching the ground... anyone hitting that car from behind would be hitting an unlicensed & uninsured vehicle.
An unlicensed & uninsured vehicle needs to be on a trailer... with no wheels touching the ground... that way the trailer insurance covers everything.
Just my 2 cents. _________________ Richard "Lada" Loiselle

| Pretty much, but it seems that customs doesn't seem to care about such things. |
